Jeff Newell's New-Trad Octet from Brooklyn has just released a fantastic new CD featuring unique takes on traditional tunes by Sousa and others. I've been listening to this regularly in my car for a few weeks now and it never fails to make me tap my foot and smile, pointing at my radio every time I get one of their many music subreferences. The CD riffs on Sousa marches The Stars and Stripes Forever, The Lambs' March and The Washington Post, then takes off in search of new perspectives on several old-time hymns in a suite called Hymn Pan Alley. Highly recommended!

Katie McKeirnan said the voice of the clarinet explains her six-year love affair with the instrument. ?I just love the sound,? she said. ?It?s so versatile. You can go so low, but then you can go so high. It imitates the human voice so well. A lot of clarinet pieces are so operatic. It?s telling a story, almost like it could speak.?
