You can often find these at your local library or up for auction on eBay . Paul E. Bierley. Westerville, OH: Integrity Press, 1973 An excellent book with concise information and many photographs. As it is one of the most recent biographies of Sousa, this book pulls together information from most other Sousa references preceding it. Highly recommended as a starting point.
Paul E. Bierley. University of Illinois Press, 2006 Over 500 pages of background on the greatest band ever! Paul Bierley has spent forty years documenting every aspect of the Sousa Band: its history, its star performers, its appearances on recordings and radio, and the problems they faced on their 1911 trip around the world. More than 120 images and photographs, six statistical appendixes detailing where the band played, what it played, a complete list of musicians, instrumentation of the band, program listings, and a discography.
Edited by Jon Newsom. Washington, D.C.: Library of Congress, Music Division, 1983. ISBN 0-8444-0425-x The book contains 144 pages and has many pictures. The book is a series of articles written by various people. Frederick Fennell has written an article entitiled "The Sousa March: A Personal View". Another article is "A Few Observations and Memories" by John Philip Sousa III. There are eight articles in all including the introduction. There is also a "Photo Essay" and biographical sketches of those who contributed articles to the book. An article by Pauline Newman studies "Nineteenth Century American March Music and J. P. Sousa." For a student of late 19th and early 20th century American music this book would be a valuable addition to any collection. (Review by George S. Barkman) Paul E. Bierley. Westerville, OH: Integrity Press, 1984 A fantastic reference! Gives the stories behind all of Sousa's marches, operettas, songs, etc. John Philip Sousa. Westerville, OH: Integrity Press, 1994 Sousa's own autobiography. Book of Instruction for the Field-Trumpet and Drum, Together With the Trumpet and Drum Signals Now in Use in the Army, Navy and Marie Corps of the U.S.John Philip Sousa. Westerville, OH: Integrity Press, 1985 Sousa's own textbook for military drum and bugle methods. Many of the original bugle calls in this book were later used in famous marches such as Semper Fidelis. The March King and His BandKenneth Berger. New York: Exposition Press, 1957. The book is 95 pages with the first 62 pages being a biography of Sousa. In this regard it is not the equal of Bierley's book. The book's real value is in the appendices that makes up the last third of the book. Appendix A lists the complete works of Mr. Sousa, including a list of his original publishers. It also lists Overtures, Operettas, Suites, Songs, Waltzes, Marches, Fantasies, miscellaneous compositions and finally miscellaneous other writings such as novels, magazine articles, etc. Appendix B contains the band roster giving the name, instrument and years with the band. In compiling this information the author admits to many problems. Appendix C is the Sousa Band on Records. Listed are the recording companiess and the record numbers. All in all this is an interesting book and one that I would recommend to a Sousa collector. I believe it is one of the first attempts at compiling the information that it contains. There is only one picture in the book itself but the dust jacket has very nice profile picture of Sousa on it. The author has had several positions with various bands in public schools and the military. He has also written several other books about bands. (Review by George S.
