10/22/2002: I
know, I know. Update the site. If you build it, they will come.
I am in the process of building the updates. In the meantime, check
out my Top 10 Sousa Recordings!
2/5/2001:
I'm really sorry it's taken me nearly a year to update the March
of the Month. More regular updates in the future -- promise.
2/2/2001:
The New York City Ballet is staging
George
Balanchine's "Stars and Stripes", a ballet set to Sousa
marches, this month!
2/1/2000:
Posted an interesting article from Dennis
Havens how Sousa's Band may have changed the rhythm in the trio of
Stars and Stripes Forever. Food for thought! Click
here to read.
10/13/99:
A special thank you to Jim Gann for his help in bringing about the world
premiere of Sousa's long-lost "Old Ironsides" march,
performed last night by the Dallas Wind Symphony. Together, Jim and
I orchestrated the march based on Sousa's rough sketches. What a
great thrill to bring a great piece of music to life after over 7 decades
in dusty storage.
7/6/99:
I added a special tribute page for The Stars
and Stripes Forever which was featured in the Yahoo! "4th of
July" news section over the weekend. It received over 4,000
hits in less than 3 days. Also a new March of
the Month has been posted.
2/3/99:
Have you checked out EBAY's auctions lately?
They usually have several really neat Sousa memorabilia items for sale. Just
search on "Sousa". You'll see a few baseball items from people who, like
Ted Kennedy, can't spell tell the difference between Sousa and Sammy Sosa, but you find
come cool stuff too. Here are a few pics of Sousa items I saw (click on the
thumbnail image to see it full size):

11/20/98:
The
Dallas Wind Symphony has just released the second of two
all-march CD's recorded last July. "Strictly
Sousa" (conducted by Jerry Junkin)
features 19 of Sousa's most famous marches, plus the national anthem (Sousa version of
course) and a hilarious bonus track where we auditioned a huge bell (for "The Liberty
Bell" march) whose overtones clashed horribly with the trio's key of Bb.
I know I'm terribly biased here as a DWS member, but as a Sousaphile I have to say this
CD is INCREDIBLE. I knew at the recording session that we played pretty well, and the
playback in the tape room sounded great, but the folks at Reference Recordings did a
simply magical job of mastering this album; it is an audiophile masterpiece.
You can listen to audio clips of this and
all DWS albums at http://www.dws.org/records.htm.
You can also order on-line at a discount (our S&H is cheap too!). Your
orders help support this site, which has remained the top Sousa information site on the
Internet for over 2 years. Thanks... and enjoy!
2/3/98:
Okay... it's finally done. Added 34 new sound clips
to complete the Sousa march sound clips section. If it's not there now, it's because
the march has never been recorded (or is extremely hard to find). Also
included are three new MIDI transcriptions by the prolific Woody Higginbotham. All new material is
marked with a
tag.
I also reduced the total number of marches listed to 135, as I
understand that there never was a "Victory Chest March". Apparently a few
bars were found but were later discovered to be an introduction to "The
Volunteers" that was rejected.
1/29/98:
Changed the layout a bit. Did you know that this site receives over 3,500
hits per month? And don't forget that you can easily order recordings of
Sousa's music on-line from the folks at Music Boulevard.
12/29/97: Be sure
to check out the new U.S. Marine Band web
site --- it is slick, informative and includes lots of great Sousa info!
12/10/97: Guess
what? If you look up John Philip Sousa in the Microsoft Encarta 98
Encyclopedia, you will see a web link to this site!
9/24/97: This site
has been chosen as a Surfer's Choice
"Cool Tracks" music site.
 8/21/97:
Dave LaFleur, of Derby, Kansas, created this detail of a small town USA marching
band as a salute to The Stars and Stripes Forever!, which premiered in
Philadelphia on May 14, 1897. The stamp was officially issued on August 21, 1997 in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Click
here to link to the U.S. Postal Service press release. A nice lady from the
Postal Service promised to send me one, but so far nothing :-)
7/15/97: We have
been chosen has a USA TODAY Hot Site
of the Day! You will also find us reviewed in the July/August issue of Internet Underground (a real honest-to-goodness PAPER
magazine). We won't be listed in the online version until the next printed issue hits the
newsstands.
7/2/97: Happy
Independence Day everyone! I have been informed that the site was mentioned in the
Business Section of the Los Angeles Times on Monday,
June 30. We have also been chosen "2 Hot 2 Handle Site of the Day" by CyberMom-Dot-Com.
Keep your eyes and ears out folks! In honor of Independence Day,
I will be posting several new sound clips and MIDI files of extremely rare Sousa marches
soon! My hope is to round out my collection of Sousa march sound clips in the very near
future.
I have been asked to do a radio interview with Ken Regez of WCLO in
Janesville, WI tomorrow, July 3 between 10:00 & 11:00am CDT.
If you will be in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area on the 4th, please come see
the Dallas Wind Symphony's Sousa Spectacular at the Meyerson Symphony
Center. Playing Mr. Sousa this year is Kevin Sedatole, director of the University of
Michigan Marching Band. We'll be doing all your Sousa favorites, and some special
rarely-heard gems such as New Mexico and Daughters of Texas.
5/12/97: I received the
following e-mail a few weeks ago. Ain't the Internet great?
Dear Mr. Lovrien:
I am sitting at my friend's house searching the
internet for information on John Philip Sousa, my great grandfather. We happened to find
your homepage and enjoyed it very much. I just wanted to let you know that I am a direct
descendant as is my brother, Hank. My father passed away several years ago, but he would
have enjoyed your page very much. I'm happy to know that there are people who enjoy
Sousa's works.
Sincerely yours,
Toni Sousa
